After gathering some feedback recently, AnimEigo is now finalizing their plans to get the Kickstarter project for Otaku no Video on Blu-ray underway. The company has set a June 2nd, 2015 launch at 10am for the project with plans tentatively being set for a February 2016 release based on previous information. With a goal of $40,000 for the project and low cost of entry for fans, the release will bring the two episode OVA series in Japanese with english subtitles to the market along with four subtitled commentary tracks that were previous produced that would include nime historian Toru Sano, Kikuko Inoue, animation producer Shouji Murahama, Gainax president and founding member Hiroyuki Yamaga, and producer Hiroki Sato.

The plans are for several stretch goals, which we hope will eb hit, as it includes things such as the patch (one was produced for the Bubblegum Crisis set), a premium artbook, artwork upgrades and more.

For reference, last December’s new Japanese release, priced at 5,800 yen, included a new audio commentary that brings in Kikuko Inoue, Shoji Murahama, Hiroyuki Yamaga and Yuki Sato. There was also a booklet and a video slideshow that brings out a number of cels and a LaserDisc version trailer included for the two original releases. AnimEigo’s edition would be using the transfer for this release with theirs.

Plot concept: Somewhat based on the real story of how Gainax was founded, Otaku no Video addresses all aspects of an otaku lifestyle. Ken Kubo is a young man living an average life until he is dragged into a group of otaku. Slowly, he becomes more like them until he decides to abandon his former life to become king of otaku —the otaking!

Mixed in are live-action interviews with real otaku, addressing every aspect of hardcore otaku life. Not only are anime and manga fans included, but also sci-fi fans, military fans, and other groups of Japanese geeks.
