There’s a lot of speculation about the future for actress Cobie Smulders as she works through the final year of production on How I Met Your Mother while also being a player in Captain America: The Winter Soldier as well as providing some nods within the fall TV series on competing network ABC with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Suffice to say, she has plenty of options ahead of her, and at this weeks Television Critics Association press event, she fielded a few questions about it that only teases more.
Due to her relationship with Joss Whedon, where he had pegged her as Wonder Woman at on point, she’s pretty hopeful she’ll get a nod in Avengers: Age of Ultron and is looking forward to exploring that particular character.
“I don’t know much about Ultron. I have some reading to do, but I’m excited. This is the mystery of Marvel. I don’t know how Maria Hill is affiliated with the Avengers sequel but we’ll see. I’m excited to read the script if it comes my way.”
With her work on Captain America: The Winter Soldier, where Whedon also got to consult a bit, she was able to highlight the way it’s different from what she did with Avengers. “It’s an entirely different movie [from ‘Marvel’s the Avengers’] too. It’s very much reality based and they try to bring the character into the world of now,” said Smulders. “He was very much affiliated with S.H.I.E.L.D. so watching that dynamic play out is what the movie is.”
She also made it clear that Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow character is someone people should be paying more attention to, saying “[Captain America’s] working very closely with Romanoff, with Scarlett [Johansson], so that’s the pairing to focus on.”
When asked the expected question about what will happen with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. when How I Met Your Mother ends and what she could do there, she said, “I don’t even know. It was announced and then all these questions come out. They are an amazing cast. They have amazing story lines and if they want to write one that involves me, I’d be happy to do it, but we’ll see.”
