Star Wars Thursday: Wherefore Art Thou Edition

2 min read

Welcome to this week’s edition of Star Wars Thursday, a celebration of all things fun, wild, and wacky in the Star Wars universe!

What could be more inspiring than the celebration of the birth AND death of the Bard himself? Working from my weekly assumption that everything under the sun has – at some point – been mashed up with Shakespeare, I started my search for ways that Star Wars fans have paid tribute to glorious Master Will. Rest assured, I was not disappointed.

Let us begin with a tale of woe. Seriously, guys, you know how much C3PO is always whining. He does have cause, most of the time. I would be pretty annoyed if I kept getting pulled apart. This stitch pattern is available for purchase on Etsy!

Did you know that A New Hope was actually stolen from a script by Shakespeare? Honest! (Okay, not really honest). Slacktory.com has excerpts from a script for The War of the Starres – or A Sudden Hope Springs Eternal. Simply adorable.

The Minnesota Fringe Festival (in 2011) ran a show called “HamLuke”. This Twin Cities Theater Connection site hosts a podcast with creators of the show, where they discuss what it was like to take the story of Hamlet and Star-Warsify it.

What happens when teenagers bring some Star Wars into their Shakespeare assignments? This video reveals the silly answer in the form of Romeo and Juliet. I admit; I chuckled a few times.

What can make the Star Wars and Shakespeare combinations even more fun? Add in Legos and a fierce insistence that “Han Shot First!” This bit of fun is from DeviantArt.com, by Swat-Strachen.

What do you think? Would Shakespeare have been Jedi, Sith, or smuggler? If Sith, what might his chosen nom de plume have been? Darth Thespian?

Come on, you know you want to chime in! Until next week – Mayest thou be present always in the Force.
