One of the more surprising and early pickups last year at Anime Expo was when FUNimation announced their acquisition of Steins; Gate. While there was some hope for it with their at the time planned release of Chaos; Head, it wasn’t a series that many expected would land with FUNimation. Things have been mostly quiet since then as the show continued to air and in Japan the final Blu-ray was released back in February of this year. FUNimation held a new Q&A online session last night and one bit that came out from it was that while it was originally planned for a “late 2012” release, it’s now getting a little firmer with a planned Fall 2012 release. It was also stated in the session that they’re currently working on the show, which would mean pre-production/casting at the least if not actual recording sessions.
Unfortunately, FUNimation continues to be a bit mum on the subject of whether we’ll see a Blu-ray release of the show. It does stand that it could have a very good shot at it as Chaos; Head was, but with some of the recent things cropping up in Japan in regards to Blu-ray from certain rights owners, and the lack of a direct statement from FUNimation about it, there’s an air of uncertainty as to whether it will be a DVD only release or a combo release.
