Julie Benz Joins ‘Defiance’ For SyFy Channel

2 min read

After spending time on Dexter and then the single season run of No Ordinary Family, Julie Benz is currently appearing in A Gifted Man but has something else lined up as well. She’s set to join Grant Bowler in the upcoming SyFy series Defiance, of which little has been said for a bit. The series currently has Tony Curran, Jamie Murray and Stephanie Leonidas set in various roles in the new series that’s being written and exec produced by Rockne S. O’Bannon, Kevin Murphy and Michael Taylor. The series is expected to start filming in April with Kevin Murphy as the overall showrunner. SyFy has not set any broadcast dates yet.

O’Bannon’s name should be familiar as he’s the main man behind Farscape. Defiance is looking to be an interesting mild hybrid property as the series is being developed alongside an online videogame.

Plot Concept: Set on a future Earth, Defiance is set in a world where humans and aliens live together on a planet ravaged by decades of war and transformed by alien terra-forming machines. It centers on Jeb Nolan (Bowler), the law-keeper in a bustling frontier boomtown that is one of the new world’s few oasis of civility and inclusion. Benz will play Amanda Rosewater, the idealistic newly appointed mayor of the mining boomtown who is determined to maintain peace in the community. Leonidas will play Irisa, a beautiful warrior who is part of an alien race called the Irathients. After Nolan killed her criminal father, he adopted the girl and raised her as his clever – and lethal – right-hand. Curran will play Datak Tarr, a member of another elite alien race known as the Castithans who schemed his way out of his home planet before it was destroyed. Murray will play Datak’s beautiful and proper wife.
