“Amao-kun’s Hometown”

What They Say:
Hakata Mentai! Pirikarako-chan is set in a mysterious shopping center in a town that is like but also not quite like Hakata. In this setting, a walleye pollack roe fairy named Pirikarakochan rushes about every day trying to ease the worries and solve the rumors of the other food fairies.

As this strange little series continues it’s getting easier to get into its rhythms and flow. With this episode, the group is off to Amao’s hometown where we mee the king, who is basically a giant strawberry looking over a field of strawberries. Which Piri spends time picking and eating, which is creepy when you consider the bigger implications. The reality is that they know that most end up in food products and are just kind of wary of insensitive questions like this that are better left unasked. Of course, the show has the annoying kid shows up and he and Piri engage in some contests to prove who is best which doesn’t really solve anything at all. Amusingly, Piri’s friends end up hidden in the massive pile of strawberries and a new comical search gets underway.

In Summary:
Strange show is strange. It’s cute and weird in a way that will appeal to kids and their sense of strangeness without trying to find the logic in it like adults do, or pointing out where it breaks down. Piri’s cute as she’s kind of oblivious to who her friends are but it works well with some of the competitive elements we get and just the general weirdness of the strawberry fields and its people who often become jams and cake frostings. Oh boy.
