“Chi runs”

What They Say:
Chi is a sweet playful kitten, always full of energy. She gets milk from Yohei, and is relaxing at home, nice and full. As she searches around the house for something exciting, she comes across Yohei walking with a handful of rubber balls. The balls bounce everywhere as he drops them, and Yohei and Chi can’t get more excited. The day ends with Chi and the family making a great memory together.

Chi’s Sweet Adventure gave us a very dreamlike episode the last time around that played to the way a day at home unfolded. Something a little mellow amid the gloom of a rainy day and all that comes from it was a welcome change after a lot of energetic episodes for the series, especially with Chi out and about with so many other cats. The time with all the kittens and how they interact and have grown closer has been cute as has been watching Blackie’s frustration in trying to teach them how to be better cats and to protect the area right while looking out for everyone else. This episode takes us toward some of the bigger picture stuff of a cat’s life and it’s nice to get back to that again for a bit.

I do like how Come-Come and Chi have built up quite the relationship at the fish place where the young woman there likes to give them food, which this time around is actual fish since she doesn’t have any cat food to give them. It’s like they hit the motherlode but Come-Come knows how it’s going to attract a lot of unwanted attention. The cold open handles this beautifully with the way it plays out and just left me grinning from that alone. The show has smoothed out some of its animation over time and that makes for a good chase sequence here, especially with laser-eyed cats chasing them that are older and more intense. It plays up the horror theme in a kid-friendly way that also lets our leads stand tall against them, which is certainly going to impress Blackie who takes up their side. Sometimes you get the impression he wants a good fight just to reinforce how imposing and in control he is here. Of course, Blackie has his own nefarious plans…

`In Summary:
When Chi shifts into action mode there’s a lot of fun to it, especially when paired with Come-Come. The two of them are still something of an odd couple but seeing them work together to protect the fish that they get is delightful to watch play out. Blackie has some good moments and the general throng of hungry cats out there hits a sweet little horror angle. Seeing the way so many “good” cats that have been protectors and teachers for Chi and Come-Come revert to classic mode with the scent of fish in the air is priceless. It builds up the scale wonderfully and while it does get ridiculous – cat-vision in particular – at times it does it in a way that works for the intended audience age and you can thrill right along with it.
