Live Action ‘Bleach’ Coming From Warner Bros.

2 min read

Did Akira teach them nothing? Apparently not as Variety (behind a paywall) is now reporting that Warner Bros. wants to bring the manga series Bleach from Tite Kubo into the live action realm. According to the first blush report that’s out, Peter Segal (Get Smart director) is set to produce and direct and potentially write it with Dan Mazeau of Wrath of the Titans set to draft the screenplay from it. Bleach is well known among anime fans as it just passed 361 episodes this week and dozens of volumes of the original manga, including a recent indication that it’s looking like it’s going to end soon. Add in a few anime movies as well which came from Viz Media (and distributed by… Warner Bros.) and you can see that the folks at the Viz Hollywood group are working to turn things into big properties as best as they can.

Plot Concept: Ichigo Kurosaki has always been able to see ghosts, but this ability doesn’t change his life nearly as much as his close encounter with Rukia Kuchiki, a shinigami (spirt of death) and member of the mysterious Soul Society. While fighting a Hollow, an evil spirit that preys on humans who display psychic energy, Rukia attempts to lend Ichigo some of her powers so that he can save his family, but much to her surprise, Ichigo absorbs every last drop of her energy.

Now a full-fledged shinigami himself, Ichigo quickly learns that the world he inhabits is one full of dangerous spirits, and along with Rukia, who is slowly regaining her powers, it’s Ichigo’s job to both protect the innocent from Hollows and to help the spirits themselves find peace.
