Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
This series has some interesting talents behind it that manage it better than most, with Hero Organization writer Kei Saikawa paired with World’s End Harem artist Kotaro Shono. Shono has a lot of works to their name and a number of hentai titles, so with this property focusing on actual harems in a distant past, it feels like they’re ideally suited to it. And it helps that Saikawa layers the start of the story well with a tease and some decent character focus, so you get the basics quickly and then can just enjoy the more lurid scenes.
With so many reveals and movements recently, the fallout is hitting and we see a couple of aspects of it. With Livu and Emine, the two are fleeing as quickly as they can by boat. Livu seems to have money from their master in order to escape, and Emine is hopeful for the future. But as it plays out, Livu knows there is only a dark end for them, no matter how much he wanted to protect Emine and make sure she had a good life. That their master organizes archers at the shore to take them out is no surprise, but it’s brutal in the moment and the visuals for it. Both had suffered so much in their short lives, and that this end was almost a given once brought into the employ of their master is just tragedy upon tragedy. We do see them kind of going into the beyond here with the afterlife, and you’re left hopeful that in this new form that they can find some peace.
Jafar, for his part, is still trying to get Hasan out of the grounds and isn’t aware of what’s going on with Livu. Which is why he can tell Hasan that the three of them will get together again in the future just like old times. It’s a risk for him to help Hasan, but it’s also the right thing, and we see how Hasan will carry on the task of trying to find Jafar’s sister. And that does not paint a good end for Jafar as the series races toward its conclusion. Particularly as the head eunuch, Livu’s master, is orchestrating his next part of the plan, filling in the mistress he seems to be both serving under and utilizing. The introduction of another male eunuch to push through his plans isn’t a surprise, as they’re just tools to him, but that he’s not actually a eunuch and is being forced to impregnate her in order to secure a baby for the Emperor is certainly a move. The head eunuch’s plans surely have some deeper meaning to them with his own quest for revenge, but it’s just spiraling in big ways here.
In Summary:
Because of the long monthly gap between installments, I ended up actually forgetting about this series, and got to start reading again since the news came out that the series is ending with the twenty-fourth chapter. I’ve definitely enjoyed the series, but missing a chapter or two certainly reminded me of the struggle I’m having with certain works these days. With just a few more chapters after this, there is plenty of room for some wild turns, which is how the series has operated from the start. I’m curious to see how it wraps up, and how many more bad ends we have for our favorite characters before it draws to a close. This installment definitely goes hard, and while it may feel sudden, it’s definitely a big part of third-act material and not much of a surprise. There can be no loose ends!
