While we saw the overall month explored before with the general mix of graphic novels throughout 2023, ICv2 has now broken out the manga into its own category to explore and see how things went down for the full year. While the world of manga struggles with getting reprints out there for older volumes, especially for smaller series, this year also shows a rare change in that Viz dominates but we do get two slots that go to other publishers.
The non-Viz Media side doesn’t have any surprises as Dark Horse gets a fifth-place slot for Berserk while Kodansha gets the seventeenth-place slot for Blue Lock. Sadly, no Yen Press or Seven Seas books could make it onto the chart and provide some competition to the behemoth that is Viz Media.
And Viz does do well with a lot of very popular books with Demon Slayer taking the top spot as well as lots of other first volumes in the top ten. There aren’t any real surprises here – no breakout titles to shake things up – so it’s all pretty familiar and while good for those titles is just a little boring considering the wide variety of titles Viz Media has to offer.
