When it comes to manga, we’ve got something of a real change here once again that’s interesting. Most months, almost all – if not all – are from Viz Media and that’s due to the power of Shonen Jump properties. It’s a real stranglehold that’s frustrating when there are so many amazing books out there and other publishers that almost never chart as we see from ICv2.
Circana now has all the data to put together how things went in 2023 overall and it’s pretty much what you expected. Out of the twenty books fifteen are from Viz Media and the first installment of Demon Slayer hits the top of it – which is absolutely no surprise. Viz Media covers a lot of ground with first volumes as you’d expect with things like Chainsaw Man, My Hero Academia, and Spy x Family as you’d expect. We also get other familiar titles.
Dark Horse Comics gets a slot with Berserk while Inklore sets up well with Lore Olympus and Kodansha shines with Blue Lock. IDW Publishing provides for one of three non-manga books on the chart with TMNT while Andres McNeel scores with The Mysteries.
