With a lot of talk about multiple Macross projects at Anime Expo last year, one question that was asked at the BIGWEST panel was where is the Macross II OVA series. The six-episode OVA series is not coming through Right Stuf in North America but through AnimEigo.
Earlier this spring, Robert Woodhead of AnimEigo talked briefly about this project in that details will be coming at Otakon this year, which tracks with the usual production times, asset acquisition, and figuring out the best approach with licensors. In July, it was revealed that there were plans for the Kickstarter will go live near the end of August with it being something that will ship in the summer of 2024.
That didn’t quite happen as it’s only now that the Kickstarter is getting underway here. The set is planned for a December 2024 release and there are several options for the show – and the possibility of a 4K UHD release down the line as well. With the Kickstarter going live just over two hours ago, it’s at just under $60,000 of the $75,000 goal to get underway.
The tiers are set with:
Basic – $40 + shipping
The basic set, a region-free BD-50 Blu-ray + inserts.
Basic + Artbook – $70 + shipping
The basic set, a region-free BD-50 Blu-ray + inserts, plus a large 8.5×11″ artbook. There’s just too much good art that deserves a full-sized presentation, so we’re not doing our usual small artbook this time. We expect the artbook to be at least 150 pages but it’s very likely to get even larger.
Additionally, if the print run for the artbook exceeds 1500 copies, we will have sufficient economies of scale to automatically upgrade from a softcover to a hardcover artbook!
Premium – $75 + shipping
The Premium set contains everything in the Basic + Artbook tier, plus (by popular demand and/or threats) a chipboard case to hold your precious Amaray and keep it safe!
Patron – $150 + shipping – Limited Reward: 80 Available
Includes everything in Premium, plus you will be listed as a Patron when the disc loads in addition to your listing in the regular disc feature.
Prominent Patron – $250 + shipping – Limited Reward: 20 Available
Includes everything in Patron, plus you will be listed on the first page of the list of Patrons in a larger font.
The show was one of the early properties that got a relatively quick release in North America after its 1992 debut in Japan as it was picked up by US Renditions with Manga Entertainment.
Plot concept: A.D. 2089 – 80 years have passed since Space War I changed the lives of both human and Zentraedi races. Both races are at peace on Earth when a new alien race called the “Marduk” appear within the Solar System. While covering the first battle between the U.N. Spacy and the Marduk fleet, SNN rookie reporter Hibiki Kanzaki discovers Ishtar, an “Emulator” that enhances the Marduk’s combat abilities through singing. Hibiki brings Ishtar to Earth to teach her the values of life and culture. Together with ace Valkyrie pilot Silvie Gena, Hibiki and Ishtar must find a way to save Earth from total destruction at the hands of the Marduk leader Ingues.
