Hotaru is a 16-year-old high school first-year who has always been ambivalent about love, preferring instead to have a lively life with her family and friends.

A new anime adaptation was announced in June 2023 for a 2024 debut with A Condition Called Love getting the nod. We’ve had a lot of details for it but now a new bit has surfaced in regards to the manga. The series has now been revealed to be entering its final arc with the next installment later this month. It’s not clear how long the final arc itself will actually run and it doesn’t impact how much the anime will adapt.

The show has set Tomoe Makino to direct it from the scripts written and supervised by Hitomi Amamiya. Akiko Sato is handling the character designs with East Fish Studio on the animation production.

The Japanese cast includes:

  • Kana Hanazawa as Hotaru Hinase
  • Chiaki Kobayashi as Noi Hana

Known originally as Hananoi-kun to Koi no Yamai, it began in 2017 and has fourteen volumes out so far and is ongoing. Serialized in Dessert magazine for Kodansha, it’s been getting an English release digitally through Kodansha Comics.

The manga was nominated for the Best Shoujo Manga at the 44th Kodansha Manga Awards in 2020 and won in 2021.

Plot Concept: Hotaru is a 16-year-old high school first-year who has always been ambivalent about love, preferring instead to have a lively life with her family and friends. So when she sees her schoolmate, Hananoi-kun, sitting in the snow after a messy, public breakup, she thinks nothing of offering to share her umbrella. But when he asks her out in the middle of her classroom the next day, she can’t help but feel that her life is about to change in a big way…
