With ‘Gaogaigar’ Anime Acquisition, We Learn How Badly The ‘Bakuman’ Anime Sold

3 min read

GaogaigarOne of the things that’s frustrating with the world of anime is that we rarely get actual figures on what moves. Occasionally we’ll get some numbers or a ballpark, but beyond that it’s always vague. Back in the early 2000s, the folks at Media Blasters began releasing the King of Braves: Gaogaigar anime series which, owing to the time, was done in blocks of five-episode DVD releases that were common. The show had the first twenty-five episodes dub but because of low sales the dub was canceled and the remaining episodes were released subtitled only.

And that was during the early 2000s boom period with people buying DVD players in bulk and scooping up all kinds of releases.

With the announcement of Discotek Media picking up the series for release, that had an amusing tweet that you can see below where we get an idea of just how bad the show did for Media Blasters back in the day. It looks like it was their second-worst-selling series after Bakuman, which was a huge fan-favorite that didn’t translate to actual sales of the home video release.

Amusingly, noting that titles like Dark Cat and Battle Can Can did better really says something.

Plot concept: In the year 2005, a race of alien monsters called Zonders emerge from underground and launch a series of attacks on the city of Tokyo. The only defense against these creatures is the secret agency known as the Gutsy Geoid Guard (or 3G) and their ultimate weapon, the awesome giant robot GaoGaiGar. GaoGaiGar’s pilot, Guy Shishio, is a former astronaut who was nearly killed two years before when the Zonders first crashed to earth. Guy’s life was spared when a mysterious robot lion called Galeon pulled him from the burning shuttle and brought him to Earth. Guy’s father, Leo, then used Galeon’s technology to rebuild his shattered son as a cyborg, in the hopes that he could stop the aliens when they appear. Now, with Galeon as its core, GaoGaiGar fights to protect Earth. He is aided by a team of transforming robots and by a young boy named Mamoru, who has the power to purify the Zonders’ cores, and seems to be connected.
