Michaela Coel Boards ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’

It's time to go back to Wakanda.

With the Black Panther film making a whopping $1.35 billion worldwide just on theatrical box office receipts, a sequel was a given. While not part of the initial Phase 4 plans that were rolled out separately we did learn back in 2019 that Black Panther 2 is set for a July 8th, 2022 releases Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Filming is set to begin in July 2021 with plans for shooting in both Atlanta, Georgia, and Australia and now some new casting information has landed. According to Deadline, Michaela Coel has joined the project, though naturally her role in it is undisclosed and Marvel Studios isn’t confirming it. Coel recently got a lot of attention for her work in I May Destroy You where she got three Emmy nominations for acting, writing, and directing on the series.

The first film was written by Joe Robert Cole and Ryan Coogler with Coogler directing and arrived on February 16th, 2018. The cast included Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa/Black Panther, Michael B. Jordan as Erik Killmonger, Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Andy Serkis as Ulysses Klaw, Winston Duke as M’Baku, Forest Whitaker as Zuri, Angela Bassett, Martin Freeman, Letitia Wright, Florence Kasumba, Sterling K. Born, and John Kani.

Plot concept: Black Panther follows T’Challa who, after the events of “Captain America: Civil War,” returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to take his place as King. However, when an old enemy reappears on the radar, T’Challa’s mettle as King and Black Panther is tested when he is drawn into a conflict that puts the entire fate of Wakanda and the world at risk.
