The summer 2021 original science fiction anime series Sonny Boy is getting distribution through Funimation as we knew previously and with the first episode out already. Now, the show is expanding its distribution with the folks at Hulu getting the simulcast side made available to viewers there, which you can find here if you prefer their app/service. Hulu only serves the US for streaming but it gets the show placed alongside many other high-profile US broadcast TV shows and films, which definitely increases its audience base.

The project comes from director Shingo Natsume, behind properties such as One-Punch Man and ACCA, with Madhouse on board for the animation production. With Natsume writing as well as directing, the series has Norifumi Kugai on board to work on the character designs that were created by Hisashi Eguchi (Perfect Blue, Roujin-Z). Shinichiro Watanabe is on board as the musical advisor for the project.

The Japanese cast includes Aoi Ichikawa as Nagara, Saori Onishi as Nozomi, Aoi Yuuki as Mizuha, Chiaki Kobayashi as Asakaze, Hiroki Gotō as Rajdhani, Ami Naitō as Hoshi, Hana Sato as Pony, Yōji Ueda as Cap, Shōta Yamamoto as Hayato, and Kana Ogino as Shanghai.

The promo includes the theme song from Kazunobu Mineta of Ging Nang Boyz with “Shonen Shojo” for the series.

Plot Concept: The science-fiction ensemble drama centers around 36 boys and girls. On August 16, midway through a seemingly endless summer vacation, middle school third-year student Nagara (center in image above), the mysterious transfer student Nozomi (right), and classmates such as Mizuho (left) and Asakaze, are suddenly transported from their tranquil daily lives to a school adrift in an alternate dimension. They must survive with the super powers that have awakened within them.
