“The Behavior of Bears”

What They Say:
GLOOMY is Pity’s pet bear. He’s a little over 6 feet and weighs as much as 2000 pomegranates. He’s well trained for the most part, but he can never remember that he’s not supposed to attack humans. Still, a pet owner must take ultimate responsibility for his pets. Recalling warm memories of GLOOMY as a cute bear cub, Pity tries to lead a life of peaceful co-existence with his pet bear.

I’m a sucker for these kinds of shows. They’re so base and simple and really belong as part of an overall clip/variety kind of show. The thing you’d see as a recurring skit in Robot Chicken. I do expect it to shake up things a little bit as it goes on but the whole premise is designed to be the anti-cute that we get for so many things, appealing to a different segment of general fandom.

Here, we’re introduced to Pity and his pet bear GLOOMY. The two are hanging out on the couch just having a good time together but you can’t escape the basic behavior of bears. They see through a report on the news that running away from bears is a bad thing because they’ll chase you. Pity asks about that while Gloomy just devours the meat in his hands. This is when the doorbell rings as Pity has a new package arriving and he casually walks to the door to get it. But he’s moving just fast enough that it sets off GLOOMY, which leads to a whole lot of on-screen carnage and an amusing ending to get the goods.

In Summary:
This is the kind of series that will have a limited appeal and turn away a lot of people that try it out without finding out about it first. Which is fine, the shock value is what it relies on, even though it’s clearly going to be violent from the start. I don’t have high hopes for this show because it is just a minute long. But I’m curious to see how well they can exercise that minute-long aspect and work varied enough gags so that it can be funny, amusing, and disturbing on a regular basis.
