The Netflix event in Singapore back in 2018 revealed another project in the works for the service on the anime side with an original work called Yasuke. The project has LeSean Thomas serving as the creator and director with MAPPA handling the animation production for it. Lakeith Stanfield was confirmed to be playing the lead character. The show is one with some interesting origins in history with the story based on the samurai of African roots who served under Oda Nobunaga.

We learned last October that the series would hit in 2021 and now it’s been revealed with an April 29th, 2021 debut on Netflix that will be available to audiences worldwide. The show is scheduled for six episodes.

Flying Lotus will compose the music and be an Executive Producer on the show.

Plot Concept: In a war-torn feudal Japan filled with mechs and magic, the greatest ronin never known, Yasuke, struggles to maintain a peaceful existence after a past life of violence. But when a local village becomes the center of social upheaval between warring daimyo, Yasuke must take up his sword and transport a mysterious child who is the target of dark forces and bloodthirsty warlords. The story of Yasuke, the first African samurai who actually served the legendary Oda Nobunaga, will be released to the world.
