It is a bit of a rehash watching Syalis hunt down a larger ghost shroud, but at least we’ve been introduced to Great Red Siberian the loyal lapdog.

The terror of the captive princess.

The Review

There is not a ton to say about this second episode of Sleepy Princess. Continuing its pace of adapting several of the short chapters of the manga, we watch as Syalis has settled into something of a routine. She has a large collection of sheets (from dead ghosts) and has a rather messy work desk where she manufactures her sundry items. Yet she remains unsatisfied for the long term.

The princess is still meeting new demons who don’t know how devious she can be and taking advantage of them accordingly. The stamp cat (a cat demon who can walk on ceilings) is tricked out of his shoes. The Demon King is shocked to learn what the Demon Cleric already knows, Syalis is highly accident-prone. Misunderstandings run rampant as the Princess tries to tie a support line, leading to one of the better gags in the episode as Frankenstein Monster contemplates death flags.

This episode includes a solution for insects that have bitten Syalis in her sleep, a hunt for soft materials, and the pilfering of a sleeping potion. The actual execution of these activities feels a bit off. Naturally, when reading these bite-sized chapters in volume form the weaker of the bunch tend to be swiftly forgotten. Stringing about four of these chapters together to form a complete episode means that the frantic pace comes off as feeling a bit disjointed.

It also means that early on in the story we haven’t moved very far away from the premise of simple sleep items yet. We do start to see that after only a week or two as a captive the Princess already has folks waiting on her hand and foot. No matter how many times she is scolded and has to play dumb she ultimately gets her way. And that isn’t changing anytime soon.

In Summary:
This second episode of Sleepy Princess is weaker than the first, but only because it is still very much in the setup stage and expanding on what we saw in the first episode. It is a bit of a rehash watching Syalis hunt down a larger ghost shroud, but at least we’ve been introduced to Great Red Siberian the loyal lapdog. I know that rearranging story chapters would likely introduce continuity issues, but this is probably going to go down as one of the weaker episodes in the long run. Everyone is still very much in the introduction phase, and I want to see Syalis venture further afield in her quest for the best sleep.
