WIT Studio brought out their big new project this summer with Great Pretender with its June 2nd, 2020 debut and the show saw worldwide release outside of Japan yesterday. And that means a chance to finally see what language options are present for it, which aren’t always simple and clear cut as Netflix attempts to get into as many markets as possible. The series makes out very well by being in its original Japanese while also having English, German, French, and Spanish language dubs created for it. Additionally, we get English subtitles along with Spanish, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Japanese closed-captions.
The show is planned for a twenty-three episode run so there’s a bit more to come in the future beyond this initial batch of sixteen completed episodes.
The series is directed by Hiro Kaburagi based on the scripts from Ryota Kosawa. Yoshiyuki Sadamoto is on the character designs and Hirotaka Kato is serving as the chief animation director along with Kyoji Asano.

Plot Concept: Makoto Edamura is supposedly Japan’s greatest swindler. Together with his partner Kudo, they try to trick a Frenchman in Asakusa but unexpectedly get tricked instead. The Frenchman, whom they tried to swindle, turns out to be Laurent Thierry- a much higher-level ‘confidence man,’ in control of the mafias. Edamura is yet to find out what fate awaits him, after having engaged in the Frenchman’s dirty jobs…!
