Marvel Sets New ‘Doctor Aphra’ Series

2 min read

One of the best things to come out of the Darth Vader series that kicked off back in 2015 was the Doctor Aphra character. A kind of Indiana Jones type with fewer morals about her, she played Darth Vader for a bit while helping to unleash my favorite pair of murderbots into the galaxy. The character proved popular enough that she was spun into her own series in 2016 that ran for forty issues.

You won’t find many Marvel series that hit a dozen issues these days, never mind forty.

Created by Kieron Gillen, when he left the Star Wars books overall Simon Spurrier took over and has worked on the book with it set to wrap up in December.

Now, at MCM London, Marvel’S David Gabriel revealed that a newly relaunched series will debut in April 2020, presumably similar to how the main Star Wars series is relaunching as it shifts to tell stories between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. The new series comes from writer Alyssa Wong and artist Marika Cresta with Valentina Remener providing the cover for it.

Alyssa Wong has a few comics under her belt with work on White Fox and Aero for Marvel while Marika Cresta has worked on several X-Men books and Summit for Lion Forge Comics.

Original concept: Rogue archaeologist Doctor Aphra barely escaped Darth Vader’s wrath. If the Dark Lord of the Sith ever learns that she still lives, he’ll hunt her to the ends of the galaxy. But for now, it’s time for a return to what Aphra does best! With killer droids Triple-Zero and BeeTee-One in tow, she’s off in search of the rarest of artifacts – as long as she can stay one step ahead of the Empire, bounty hunters…and just about everyone else! But soon, archaeologist and rebel pilot stand side-by-side when Aphra persuades Luke Skywalker to join her in a journey to the heart of the Screaming Citadel! What secret are they after? And when word gets out, can Han and Leia be far behind them?
