What They Say
A mysterious invitation has brought Yumeko to her second gamble of the student council presidential election: a two-on-two card game with Suzui against yet more members of the Momobami family! Sisters Miyo and Miri come from a branch of the family specializing in poisons of all types. They hold life and death in their hands-sometimes quite literally. And in this game…VERY literally! With Yumeko’s life on the line, will Suzui come out on top or perish with her?!

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
Gambling for money at the Hyakkaou Private Academy has been put on hold, at least temporarily. For the time being, all the students are gambling for chips worth one vote in the sudden election for a new Student Council President. The student that wins the most chips, votes, will be the next president. At this school, the position of president is an incredibly powerful title. So, important is it that Kirari’s extended family clans have all sent their student representatives to try and win the position of president.

Kirari’s angle and motive for potentially losing her position remain a mystery. I think there is something to it beyond just being a gambling addict like Yumeko. Figuring out the truth behind Kirari’s motives will have to wait.

Yumeko and Suzui have been invited to a gambling match with a pair of sisters from the presidents extended family. These two also happen to be distant relatives of Yumeko and they make no doubt that they plan to destroy her. Their interactions show how much animosity the various clans under the Momobami family have for each other.

Their card game should be mostly luck of the draw, but the sisters have an uncanny ability to communicate without speaking. This immediately puts Yumeko and Suzui at a disadvantage, plus Suzui just kind of sucks at gambling. Things seem to be going normally until Yumeko suddenly passes out and the sisters admit that they poisoned her. To get the antidote, Suzui must win their game and time for Yumeko is running out! Can Suzui win under all this pressure? Is Yumeko doomed to die from a card game after all the other crazy stuff she has survived thus far?

In Summary:
Somehow Yumeko finds a way to win most of her gambling matches, or at least minimize the damage. Most of that ability comes from her immense intelligence and experience level with various games. But, even she can fall victim to an underhanded trick before a gambling match even begins. This volume shows that Yumeko is human, and can be killed just as easily as any other person walking down the street. It is a great angle to the series, making Yumeko both vulnerable and more likable. Another great volume and as always I can’t wait for the next release.
