The Weekly Movies Discussion Post For December 23rd, 2018

The deluge of new films as part of the holiday season picks up this weekend with a lot of fun things out which I’m hoping to catch during the next week as things quiet down. One film I did make it out relatively on time to this past week, however, was Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. I had read some of that event in comics form when it landed which got me to reading Spider-Gwen for awhile until the whole crossover-itis that Marvel employs got me to drop that and Spider-Man 2099. But I have a real affection for a lot of these characters and getting such a wonderfully stylish and animated film put together like this is what a great deal of comics fans have wanted for years. Not the Pixar approach but something that adapts and expands on what the comics medium can do in film form. Hell, Spider-Ham made it into it and having bought all his appearances when he first arrived in the ’80s was such a delight. Miles Morales as a character definitely owns the film and his journey is fantastic, but it’s played so expertly alongside the mentor angle that’s often a lesser storyline. Using the Peter B. Parker character was a great choice but I was sold from the first trailer appearance for him once I realize it was Jake Johnson playing him as he captures every aspect of this weary and worn iteration.

I didn’t make it to any other movies, unfortunately, but I had one new addition to my Netflix queue with 2036: Origin Unknown because, well, Katee Sackoff. With Longmire done I need whatever I can get of her.

Pickups were decent this week as I tried to not go overboard with the latest iTunes sale. I finally got Crazy Rich Asians after missing it in the theater (damn MoviePass) while I picked up Alpha for my youngest as she was very keen on it and The Meg for my eldest daughter as she’s a huge fan of giant monsters destroying stuff.

I had intended to background watch the Resident Evil series this past week but perhaps Christmas break is ideal for it?

Here’s to a new year of new films and excitement ahead. I’m even more excited after some of the recent trailers we had for what’s to come, especially Men in Black International among others.
