We learned back in May that the fall crossover event on The CW would involve Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Arrow, and The Flash and that it would introduce Batwoman to the screen for the first time in live-action. I had figured at the time that a series of her own was likely in the works and I still think it’d serve as the new anchor after Arrow ends. Now, Deadline is reporting that a Batwoman series is in development for a 2019 series consideration. With Greg Berlanti overseeing it as part of the CW Arrowverse along with other projects, it also has Caroline Dries of The Vampire Diaries serving as an executive producer.
The premise is being laid out thusly: “In Batwoman, written by Dries based on the DC characters, armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.”
With the character set for the crossover there was already going to be a lot of interest in the role since it could spin into its own series. Now that it’s being actively explored the stakes are all the higher and casting will come very soon for it.
The character originally showed up in 1956 in Detective Comics #233 and has had a lot of animated appearances over the years, as well as her own ongoing series and a really great interpretation that kicked off the Bombshells digital-first comic series.
