Onigiri Episode 9The Pain of Separation

What They Say:
Journey to the otherworldly land of mystical Japan, where oni aren’t the only legendary creatures that actually exist. To save their world, these mythical beings will work together to fight the Kamikui and their evil influence before the dark beings’ miasma covers the land. With eight extremely unique and determined party members, the quest to dispel a great evil will certainly never be boring!

Driving me a bit nuts the last time around with the idol side, a slice of anime that’s just been driven into the ground hard the past decade, Onigiri moves forward to its next piece as the girls fight against the Kamikui. This installment shows us that there are exceptions to the Kamikui as we get a couple of gargoyle types that just want to eat noodles and hang out by the river. Granted, we see them as their gargoyle-ish self first before getting them re-interpreted as cute school girls, but you get the ideal. When the pair have to deal with some villagers that are total Mad Max types trying to destroy them as the threat they believe them to be, it’s fun to watch because the men’s dialogue is all roars and growls in contrast to the sweetness of the girls. They end up separated, however, in the fight and flight, The focus shifts a bit to one of the sisters ending up with the usual crew, which adds some sadness to the mix.

In Summary:
With a bit more of a serious episode here, the introduction of the not-normal Kamikui characters (have any truly been normal) works to shift one of them into the group that’s come together as we get that interaction at the end. Most of it is just the sisters trying to enjoy a little bit of food before the villagers come by to burn them to a crisp. If they had kept them to their natural form I think it would have worked better but I’m not surprised that everything gets turned cute and merchandisable as it does here.
