I Can’t Understand What My Husband is Saying 2nd Thread | Episode 10 | TFP Review
Library-chan: I don’t understand something. Was the whole “My husband and I were working in a restaurant and he confessed to a coworker but that coworker turned him down” really happen, or was it part of the novel that the girl at the end was writing?
Paranoia Gent: I was a bit confused by that as well, but I think the idea is that the writer is the same girl who turned Hajime down, right? If that’s true, then I think she was writing about something that really happened, but I’m not a 100% sure, tbh. Did I just imagine this or, at the end of last season, did we find out that Kaoru was pregnant? Assuming I didn’t imagine that, I kinda thought they’d pick up on that thread this season, but I guess not.
bctaris: That’s right, it was the same girl. And given Kaoru’s reaction, she was indeed writing a novel based on their real experience.
But one of the interesting things about this show is that minor meta-narrative sense to it, where both of their lives seem ordinary but, because of who they are (a young woman who thought she’d be alone forever; a virginal otaku), also unbelievable (particularly because it is normal). So you get these episodes, like the dream one late last season, where the show mixes up its often honest view of what must seem to its characters a mundane marriage with a sort of magical realism. Where real life is too unreal not to be (from, say, Hajime’s perspective) a light novel–or manga, or anime–adaptation of a life. Which, to us, it is, anyway. Not that it makes us any less confused about what a life like that portrayed here means.
Heck of a show, still. As for the pregnancy, yeah, I have no idea either.
