Harrow Country Issue 1 CoverCreative Staff:
Story: Cullen Bunn

What They Say:
Emmy had always been different. From an early age, she could hear the whispers from the woods around her old farmhouse, echoing from a gnarled Oak at the edge of the property. She grew older, the darkness crept closer, and on the eve of her eighteenth birthday a secret will be unearthed. A secret buried beneath the Oak that’s watched over Emmy her entire life.

Content:
Wonderfully eerie and alluring, Harrow County #1 sets the stage for what is sure to be a thrilling and terrifying story. When the livestock starts to die and dark omens manifest, the townsfolk gather at the door of the local medicine woman and accused witch. Rumors have begun to spread of dark consort with unspeakable beasts and children are disappearing from their beds. After being shot, stabbed, and hanged from a massive Oak, her body is set ablaze. While the flames consume her, she utters a dread prophecy, and the witch swears her return. This dark event sets the stage for the story and the horrors to follow. Five pages in and you have a burning witch? This is my kind of setting.

Tyler Crook’s (B.P.R.D) superlative watercolors fit right in with the dreary country background. A master of his craft, Crook’s ability to blend solid line work with watercolor offers the best of both worlds, and brings a nightmarish quality to the panels. The art and story come together in more than just function, they compliment each other perfectly, creating a mood that’s equal parts intrigue and atmosphere.

In Summary:
With its roots set deeply in Southern mysticisms, Harrow County looks to deliver chills by the boatload. With the first issue off to a great start, I eagerly await the darkness to follow, and look forward to what Bunn and Crook will bring to the table. Prepare from some Southern-fried horror in Harrow County.
