With the month of March 2015 behind us, the BookScan numbers have landed and the changes to the chart in recent months are definitely making an impact. With the shift to including more general graphic novels into the list as opposed to more traditional comic book oriented ones, a lot of superhero material is getting nudged off the list. Well, slammed, really, as only two superhero items make their way here at a time when superhero material feels like it’s at an all time high due to film and TV.
That comes with DC Comics having Batman: The Killing Joke deluxe edition out there and Marvel Comics with Civil War. So, nothing really new at all. On the manga side, publishers there hold five of the top twenty positions with Naruto taking the top spot for Viz Media while Attack on Titan gives Kodansha it’s highest spot at number five. Seven Seas Entertainment takes a strong number six position with the Monster Musume series, which is doing very well for them
A lot of what’s populating the chart now are what are called “author” titles, which aren’t tied to an overarching universe or anything, with The Walking Dead being an example along with other Imgae Comcis releases, as well as the various strip books like Calvin & Hobbes and the continued presence of March on the shelves, which is a big positive for bringing the medium out to more people.
Still, you can see how those that spend their time in the superhero side are looking askew at the changes to the chart.
