Steven DeKnight Talks ‘Punisher’ Potential

2 min read

The PunisherWith Daredevil about to debut, showrunner Steven DeKnight is out and about doing interviews to promote the project and naturally some places get him talking about things that he probably shouldn’t in some ways. One of those is his desire to see The Punisher get his due, thinking that after the theatrical outings so far, the Netflix location may be the best place to realize it.

“I’ve been a huge fan of the Punisher comics for years,” says DeKnight, speaking exclusively to SciFiNow.”I’d love to see him get his due on a platform like this. Nothing would delight me more than to see the Punisher get his own show and maybe we could convince Marvel to go Hard-R rating. If any character deserves an R rating, it’s the Punisher.”

The character was used to get Charlie Cox to think about his portrayal of Daredevil:

“Steven DeKnight said that Daredevil is one bad day away from being the Punisher,” said Cox. “I thought that was really helpful. Again, it adds to the dark tone, and I think it’s more interesting to watch.

The Punisher was origianlly created back in 1974 in the always sought of Amazing Spider-Man #129, which was created by Gerry Conway, Ross Adnru and John Romita, Sr. The character has had multiple series over the years in the comics world and was given quite a strong place back in the 90’s when the violent side of comics were all the rage. At one point he had three different monthly comics. With a number of animated appearances that toned down the character, we also saw three live action films made with Dolph Lundgren in 1989, Thomas Jane in 2004 and Ray Stevenson in 2008. The rights reverted to Marvel a few years back and we had teases that he might have had a certain almost off-screen cameo in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but Marvel hasn’t formally set any projects with the character.
