Star Wars Thursday: Fisher Frenzy Edition

3 min read

Star Wars Princess 1Oh Princess, my Princess!

Last week I celebrated one of my childhood heroes, Harrison Ford, because he is gallant and brave and just a bit lucky.

This week, I knew my post would have to be a tribute to the brilliant and witty Carrie Fisher. I received (finally!) my copy of the first Princess Leia comic this week.More importantly, Carrie was at the Indiana Comic Con last weekend. I kept seeing tweets from people who got to listen to her speak. The crowning moment, though, was when I saw this:

Yes, that’s exactly what you saw. Carrie Fisher takes the time to talk with each person in the autograph line and covers them with glitter. I was feeling just the tiniest bit of jealousy, I can admit it. I detest glitter, but glitter from the hands of my Princess would be something else entirely.

Amy Ratcliffe wrote about her experience on her Geek With Curves blog. She described the joy of listening to Fisher speak, the excitement of waiting in a line with other fans for five hours, and watching Fisher anoint those ahead of her in line…

“She told a little girl the glitter would keep her safe and sprinkled generous amounts into her hair. By adopting this glitter blessing tradition, Fisher turned what would be a fleeting moment with her while she signed her name into an unforgettable and fabulous occasion.”

You definitely want to check out the rest of her description, because it all shows what an incredible treasure we have in Carrie Fisher.

All of this comes amidst major hullabaloo about getting action figures that represent our favorite royal. Hasbro is celebrating the digital release with 24 action figures. None of those figures are Leia. There was also recent concern that one of the upcoming Black Series Leia’s was being canceled and replaced by another Stormtrooper. Thankfully, that appears to have been a misunderstanding.

I plan to vote with my wallet and buy as many different Leia figures as they put out… or at least as many as I can afford!

My hope is that there will be several new ones released near Christmas to go along with the opening of The Force Awakens. Maybe this is the time we’ve been waiting for? Maybe now the toy companies will actually release figures of our First Lady of SciFi along with the men? Can we dare to dream that we’ll also get the other ladies in the first waves of toys and that they will appear on lunch boxes and quilts?

Let’s all wave a hand through the air – Jedi style – and intone, “These are the toys we’re looking for”.

In the meantime, I think the ball is in Mark Hamill’s court now. Can he top walking away from a small plane crash or anointing fans with glitter while filling them with joy and hope?

Until next week – may the Force be with you!
