Way back in May 2014, we talked about how Roland Emmerich wanted to do a new sequel film for Stargate, as he’s quite close to the property overall after all its incarnations, but the suggestion to just reboot and plan a trilogy around it was formed. Emmerich had a few other things on his plate at the time to finish up first, but expected to look for writers soon after the news broke.

Now, almost a year later, we’ve finally got movement on the project. With the director done with Stonewall and prepping for Independence Day 2, he’s got the writers on board he wants to start working through the drafts with Nicolas Wright and James A. Woods. The pair have been involved with some unfilmed properties and did some work on the draft for Independence Day 2, so it’s obvious that Emmerich likes what the pair are producing and are keeping them close.

Original premise: When Professor Daniel Jackson innocently accepts the offer of a mysterious woman to decode an ancient Egyptian artifact know only as the Stargate, he unwittingly takes the first step on an epic adventure that will span the galaxies and decide the fate of an entire planet. Colonel Jack O’Neil a true soldier with nerves of steel and a tragic past, is brought back to active duty to commandeer the first trip through the Stargate. On a desert planet on the far side of the universe, Jackson and O’Neil must battle the powerful alien Sun God, Ra. At stake: the freedom of an ancient civilization from slavery and any chance of ever getting home!
