After her turn in Lucy last year, parts of which could easily be considered the starting point for some of this, Scarlett Johansson has now boarded Ghost in the Shell‘s live action feature film development. It was previously reported that Margo Robbie was in line for it, but she shifted gears late last year and opted to work on the Suicide Squad film. Johansson gained a lot of additional acclaim in the past year for her work on Under the Skin and is a well known commodity to work with in trying to launch a potential new franchise as well due to her time in the various Avengers related films.

The film is set to be directed by Rupert Sanders and is being produced by Avi Arad and Steven Paul with Mark Saurian as executive producer. DreamWorks is producing the film itself and Paramount may end up co-producing it and investing in it as well.

Property concept: Major Motoko Kusanagi is a beautiful but deadly cyborg that is squad leader of Section 9-the Japanese government’s clandestine unit assigned to battle terrorism and cyber warfare.
