30 Day Movie Challenge Day 24: An Unexpected Film

While I’ve made no bones about being interested in romantic movies in their drama or comedy form, I still get a lot of surprise from people when I talk about how The Notebook is probably one of my absolute favorites for it. Enough so that I went and bought the Limited Edition Gift Set when it came out several years ago. The film is one that works the genre well as it’s basically all about manipulating the emotions of the audience in a big way, something that I talked about with Titanic, which did it in a bigger scale.

As a period piece romance, the film works a story in past and present well to tell a tale of romance that’s wrought with problems and heartache across them all. It’s over the top, it’s manipulative and it’s the kind of thing that drives a lot of people that love these kinds of films to tears. It’s a film that I enjoy largely because of that, since it can bring out emotions you may be subconsciously keeping submerged and it can allow them to surface in a good way.

While not all of the Nicholas Sparks based films work as well as this one, some do come a bit close, this one is the film that really does it for me and continues to be one that people that don’t know me well are the most surprised about when I talk about it. And it frustrates the hell out of my significant other since she’s not exactly into these kinds of films and dreads when I pull out that limited edition set with a grin!
