It’s a busy year coming up for Attack on Titan with the live action film coming along and the two compilation films that are being produced based off of the anime series landing as well. The first film premiered this weekend in Japan and at the stage event for it, it was announced that a second anime series is going to be produced. While it may be disheartening to the fans, it won’t arrive until 2016. The original series aired in 2013.

Based on the manga by Hajim Isayama, the property has been a solid crossover hit after the initial groundswell of support through the stream that Crunchyroll and FUNimation handled last year and then the broadcast of the dub on Toonami this year alongside the release of the season in some elaborate home video sets from FUNimation. The manga continues to chart very well for domestic distributor Kodansha Comics as well, while numerous spinoff manga have been picked up by them and Vertical, along with some light novel work.

No details about the production team for the new series have been announced, but it’s presumed that the same team is deep into pre-production at this stage as the second compilation film moves through its latter stages of work ahead of its June 27th, 2015 release in theaters.
