After the big double header last week of popular movies, this week brings out the straightforward comedy approach with Dumb and Dumber To taking center stage with a $38 million debut. That pushes Big Hero 6 to second place with a very strong hold at $36 million while Interstellar has a good hold as well at $29 million. With little else new out there, though some good films in play and a few expansions such as Birdman, the weekend definitely went well. For Interstellar, it had a great weekend in the worldwide market where it’s in 64 territories compared to the 24 for Big Hero 6. Overseas, Interstellar did another $106 million, which brings its grand total for the past two weekends to $321 million.
The weekend overall essentially went as predicted, and most expect Dumb and Dumber To to drop pretty fast as it’s got a low CinemaScore and weak reviews to say the least. It’s also going to face huge competition this coming weekend from The Hunger: Games – Mockingjay Part 1 and the following weekend brings out Horrible Bosses 2, which will bite into the comedy side in a big way.
