Sequels Rule Box Office Weekend

With a close race that could still shake out a little differently for the weekend, it’s all about the sequels as the top three films are just that. Think Like a Man Too arrived at a $30 million opening on a $24 million budget and it’ll do decently from here on out but will drop relatively fast overall, likely coming in a bit shorter than the original across the board. 22 Jump Street had a decent drop of just 49% from its opening weekend to bring in $29 million, making $111 million so far domestically. We saw the film Friday night and it had a good audience still and certainly plenty of so bad it’s funny kind of laughs.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 is not performing the same as the 2010 feature, which isn’t a surprise, but it’s doing fairly well but looks like it won’t have a lot of legs. That could change in the next few weeks though as there’s little out there in the way of kids fare so it could be one of the main holdovers for a slow domestic box office build.

The other new film this weekend was Jersey Boys, which played as a drama and not as a music as it adapted the Broadway play of the same name. It came in under expectations at just $13 million and is completely the wrong fit for summer fare, which studio Warner Bros. wanted it to be unfortunately.

This coming weekend is the start of Transformers: Age of Extinction and it’ll play heavily through the 4th of July weekend, so its box office will be big as expected but it’s also going to be scattershot with a lot more weekday showings taking place as summer is finally here.
