Star Wars Thursday: Lego Leia’s Break Edition

3 min read

Star Wars Leia 1Welcome back to Star Wars Thursday, a celebration of the wonderful and often wacky world of a galaxy far, far away.

Lego Leia hangs out with me all the time. I even pulled her out of my pocket on Tuesday to show a little boy who’d visited my classroom! Some days, though, she just insists on jumping into the fray and having her picture taken. My school district had a short Spring Break this year, but we made every moment count. I’ll step back and let her take the pen… errr….keyboard.

We started our weekend adventures by filling a bowl full of plastic eggs with little slips of paper. While that may seem odd to non-Earthians, it was for the best of causes. Maria was helping her family make 105 of these little beauties, filled with fun facts about 1909 and birthday wishes, to give to her husband’s grandmother. Why 105? Edna celebrated her 105th birthday on Sunday! Yes, that doesn’t seem as amazing when you think about Yoda’s advanced age, but I’m assured that for Earth-folk that is impressive… most impressive.

Next up was taking real eggs– from the species Gallus gallus domesticus — and submerging them into brightly colored dyes. Maria’s sons had chosen a fun kit that would make splatter style eggs, but they didn’t listen to my insistence that they read the directions before tossing the raw eggs into boiling water. Or before taking those eggs and cooling them….

Well, this is a lovely color. I suppose this could be an entertaining way to spend an afternoon. It does seem like my time would be better used creating art that will last, though. The lovely eggs you see above just get smashed and eaten!

Ahhh… this is more like it. The youngling here at Maria’s house went with a small group of age mates to try out different types of art. They did drawing, painting, collage, and clay. Maria called this color he mixed, “Eyes like the sea after a storm.” I am fairly certain that’s not a Star Wars quote.

Next up was the chance to do some flower arrangements for a holiday sale. I found this oddly soothing. Maybe I should suggest that some of the teens who have anger issues in Jedi training take up this pursuit. I helped Maria create this basket for us to take home.

On an entirely different note, we also spent a great deal of time Sunday creating a delicious family meal. I bet the Mos Eisley Cantina would have fewer fights if they served lasagna every week!

We wrapped up our long weekend by celebrating Earth Day together. They may not have to worry about a Death Star, but humans seem to be doing an effective job destroying the planet all on their own. This lovely planet is sweet and backward, but I do hope they learn to value what they have.

There you have it, my friends — Lego Leia and her most recent excellent adventure.

Until next week – may the Force be with you!
