Sometimes you keep track of particular people just to see when they transition out of one area to another to see what they can come up with. Such is the case of Alex Garland, who wrote both 28 Days Later and Sunshine, two movies that still stick strongly with me. He’s making the transition from screenwriter to director with Ex Machina and the first image from the feature has landed. The project, which doesn’t have a release date since it doesn’t have distribution yet, which may change if it hits the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, stars Oscar Isaac, Domhanall Gleeson and Alicia Vikander. Garland wrote the screenplay for it as well for the $15 million budget picture that filmed in the UK for DNA Films.

Plot concept: Caleb, a 24 year old coder at the world’s largest internet company, wins a competition to spend a week at a private mountain retreat belonging to Nathan, the reclusive CEO of the company. But when Caleb arrives at the remote location he finds that he will have to participate in a strange and fascinating experiment in which he must interact with the world’s first true artificial intelligence, housed in the body of a beautiful robot girl.
