Fans have been waiting awhile for the first full look at one of the riskier projects by Marvel Studios since they began their own films with Iron Man and now we have a taste of Guardians of the Galaxy. The piece is focused largely on Chris Pratt as Peter Quill, using him as the accessible eyes and ears for the first-timers to the property to see what’s going on. It is an ensemble cast so that can annoy some fans who have been invested in the comics, but it’s a smart opening movie for the large audience that gets to see the property for the first time. There’s a lot of good visual cues mixed in here about Quill here about his origin that people can pick up on and talk about, especially those first moments where he’s basically recreating Raiders of the Lost Ark. Child of the 80’s indeed.
