Tonari no Seki-kun Episode 3
Tonari no Seki-kun Episode 3
Wax on, wax off.

What They Say:
Class is in session at a certain high school. While the teacher isn’t looking, a boy named Seki-kun is playing games by himself on his desk, while the girl who sits next to him, Yokoi-san, observes (or interferes or participates). Each time, Seki-kun’s games reach unimaginable levels… And this time the game is…

The Review:
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
Seki-kun has proven to be quite the hit in my household as I showed the first two episodes to a range of women and the all laughed quite a lot with it, which in turn had us watching more short-form comedies to make them laugh. Seki and his ways definitely hit some sweet spots with what he does, but it’s also very easy to get caught up in Yokoi’s attempts at understanding what’s going on. Such is the case here as he pulls out an array of tools to take care of his desk and get it back in shape. Which is useful considering the kinds of damage he causes.

But he gets so professional with it all that you really have to appreciate the way he goes all out with it. Of course, when he gets going at first it causes shavings to fly everywhere but only Yokoi really realizes it as she tries to study in English clash. His efforts are great to watch though as he polishes it to a great shine that would make anyone jealous. Even Yokoi has to admire what he does as it’s a thing of beauty. Seki’s obsessive ways are definitely comical though as he sees a dirty spot on Yokoi’s desk and even tries offering to pay her in order to clean it since he can’t have it like that, especially with all his tools in hand. The two have a cute relationship in this one with what Seki does and Yokoi definitely tries to keep a bit more distance here while still trying to placate him.

In Summary:
Rather than getting all up in some sort of toy or other playful kind of thing, Seki takes his seriousness in a different direction here by being obsessively clean. He has good reason to be since a clean desk means he can do the things that he wants all the easier and it’s fun to see just how far he’ll go to accomplish it, especially since Yokoi gets caught up in it in a different way than we’ve seen before. Add in some fun because it’s English class and you have to appreciate how well they handled those aspects and you’ve got a good episode, though not quite as laugh out loud funny as the first two.
