Before there will be jousting, there will be swimsuits.

Episode 09: “The Maidens’ Festival”

Apparently, the Summer Jousting Tournament isn’t all there is. The day before the tournament begins, the girls of Winford Academy join battle on a completely different stage: a beauty contest.

Really?

Really?

Yes, I’m afraid it is so. Not that I mind seeing beautiful young maidens in swimsuits, but can things get any sillier? Need I post a review other than this?

Need I write anything more?
Need I write anything more?

Oh, there were attempts at humor and something masquerading as a plot too. In this installment, Bertille muddies the waters by spreading the misinformation that Takahiro is going to choose whoever wins the beauty contest as his knight to serve. Doesn’t matter that it’s not true. This provides an excellent chance to show the main girls in swimsuits.

And for some of the girls to try out their charms on the robot:

"So, how do you like the room service?"
“So, how do you like the room service?”

His lack of reaction is proof that he’s either not alive or not human. I continue to be surprised why all of the girls are interested in him, though I should not be since he’s the designated Object of Female Attention. Barring that, I don’t think there would be much interest in him. Oh, yeah, the excuse for a plot. On the day of the contest, Lisa’s swimsuit goes missing, jeopardizing her participation in the competition. We are pointed towards the culprit being Fiona, Lisa’s annoying hanger-on (if she acts like this, she’s hardly a true friend), even though we’re presented with a false accusation lodged against Lisa’s cat. In the end, it’s a double feint as Fiona (who is annoyed at Lisa at the time) comes along and reminds Lisa that she usually puts on her swimsuit under her clothes before PE classes, and so Lisa is already wearing her swimsuit.

The contest itself is ridiculous in the extreme. The talents put on display are…were those talents? Doesn’t really matter, as it’s a forgone conclusion that Celia would win. So, does this mean that Takahiro will choose Celia to be the knight he serves? Of course not, as Takahiro comes along and exposes Bertille’s misinformation for what it is.

Well, there were swimsuits. Other than that, I’m not sure what I can say that’s positive about this episode.

In Summary:
Cute girls, swimsuits. For some anime, that’s all they need and this is all this episode of Walkure Romanze provides. Winford Academy runs a beauty contest right before the Summer Tournament and this year there’s extra impetus for our main girls to enter as Bertille puts out a rumor that Takahiro will serve as the squire to the winner. Not true, but it does get Mio, Noel, Akane, and Lisa to enter the contest. The winner of the contest, however, seems to have been chosen before it even started. That doesn’t mean Takahiro’s made his decision yet.
