With a very heavy promotional push, things didn’t go quite to plan for the original film Pacific Rim from Guillermo del Toro as the film landed in third place. It was bested by the other new film of the weekend, Grown Ups 2, which brought in $42.5 million to Pacific Rim‘s $38 million. Both of them were taken down by Despicable Me 2, which landed at $44.7 million after doing a large $180 million domestically prior to this weekend. Add in 6th place Monsters University and you’ve got just a few family things to see and a lot of money going there.
While fans of Pacific Rim may be cringing, the film did a bit better overseas as it opened in about half the markets there to bring in an additional $53 million. Grown Ups 2 won’t play huge overall, only adding in ten markets with an additional $1.7 million, and with the way that studios do look at the larger picture, Pacific Rim certainly fares better overall so far. Of course, Despicable Me 2 opened to more territories over the weekend so it brought in another $55 million, putting it in first place ahead of Pacific Rim by about $9 million.
