Questioning Fandom: What Incomplete Anime Needs To Be Finished?

As the way anime series are created over the years has changed, with more shows being done based on manga that have only a few volumes to their name, we often get a lot of shows with some great promise that never get to be fully realized in anime form. As the series go on in manga form, more characters show up and more interesting and expansive storylines can hit that will never be animated. It’s rare that a show will get to come back with continued material from where it left off and even rarer for a full on reboot like Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, where it’s all done from the beginning again and in full just as the main work is about to come to an end.

With the recent news that Vampire Knight is drawing to a close in manga form, we wanted to find out from fans what manga series they’d like to see get finished in anime form if it had some episodes before. Vampire Knight had its anime run but obviously not to its conclusion. The same can be said of light novel series, as I’d love to have more of the Crest of the Stars books brought out to bring that fascinating world and set of characters to life all the more.

What series would you crave most for a return to bring it all to completion?

  1. Remember Eat-Man? Great stories told in those two animes, and the manga had even better ones as it lkept going. I’d love to see more of that animated. Plus, I am always waiting for more Ring ni Kakero 1 to be animated; new footage was made for a pachislot machine last year, and it’s such a tease.

  2. I’d love to see someone pick up the mantle for Trinity Blood though and really run with it.

  3. Crest of the Stars, Twelve Kingdoms, Full Metal Panic, My Dear Marie, Tenjou Tenge, Pilot Candidate (though even the manga’s author seems to have abandoned it), The Guyver, Rozen Maiden, Pumpkin Scissors, Nabari No Ou, and (I’m not sure if there’s more manga to adapt or not, but either way) Yugo the Negotiator. The current market NEEDS some more realistic manly man adventures. Too bad Yugo can’t team up with Master Keaton or Golgo 13.

  4. Agreed! My one reservation about bringing it back would be that if it were stretched over a 12 or 13-episode span, it might lack much of the spontaneity that fueled it (but if they bring back Akitaro Daichi as producer, then I’d feel a little more assured).

Another series worth reviving would be Shinesman. Granted, back in 1996, it was a mere two-episode OVA series, but with the manga completed as of 1998, there would be enough material to fuel a 13 (or even 26) episode series. Again, I have the same major concern as Rane, but if they include Sheena (her ditzy-yet-cute personality helped propel the all-too-brief series), then it’ll be a surefire hit. (And yes, I am aware her character was never featured in the manga, but her presence is a must.)

As for inconclusive series, one that hasn’t been mentioned yet is Princess Nine. I won’t spoil things, but the ending felt way too sudden and inconclusive. It needs to be brought back to the mound for another season (and better animation, at that).
Area 88 needs a conclusive ending as well (something both the 80s OVA series and 2004 TV series sorely lacked).
