‘Star Wars’ TV Series Inches Closer Due To Merger

2 min read

StormtrooperThings are still a long way off, but there’s some reasons to be hopeful that Disney and ABC “get it” when it comes to working with big properties. With Lucasfilm now formally being a Disney company, the plans are to start talking about what can be done. At some of the press junkets going on this week as the first half of the 2013 TV series gets dealt with as there are many, many presentations going on, one of the more interesting parts dealt with ABC Entertainment President Paul Lee, who was talking about how they worked with the Marvel acquisition to eventually bring about the S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot and see how the Star Wars universe would work the same way.

“We’d love to do something with Lucasfilm,” ABC Entertainment President Paul Lee told the outlet. “We’re not sure what yet… We haven’t even sat down with them. We’re going to look at [the live-action series], we’re going to look at all of them, and see what’s right. We weren’t able to discuss this with them until [the acquisition] closed and it just closed. It’s definitely going to be part of the conversation.”

“It’s going to be very much up to the Lucasfilm brands how they want to play it,” he adds. “We got to a point here with Marvel, a very special point, where we’re in the Marvel universe, and very relevantly so, but we’re not doing ‘The Avengers’. But S.H.I.E.L.D. is part of ‘The Avengers’. So maybe something oblique is the way to [approach the Star Wars universe] rather than going straight head-on at it.”

So nothing will happen for awhile, but the obvious angle is to start working on some cross development with what happens with Episode VII to do something in the same realm in order to cross promote and expand while providing something original and new, similar to what they’re doing with The Avengers.
