Questioning Fandom: Is Anime Too Sexy?

2 min read

Sex is all around us to be  sure as it’s in practically every element of our lives in both subtle and blunt ways. When it comes to anime, there’s always been the appeal in it that it acknowledged sexuality, sometimes stronger, sometimes weaker, whereas animation from the US tended to be aimed solely at children. As social mores change, so does our entertainment as the majority of it truly is a reflection of who we are rather than leading us to where we end up going. There are shows that lead the way, but the majority just follow the trends.

This season of series may be a bit of an outlier compared to past ones, but the question has to be asked after the way a lot of series have gone in the last few years. Is anime too sexy for its own good at this point?

It’s certainly not to say that we’re being prudes, my extensive hentai library proves that, but it seems like it’s becoming a greater and greater part of shows where it doesn’t really below. It’s silly to say sexuality should not exist when dealing with high school stories. I really liked School Days because a lot of it dealt with it pretty straightforward. A show like the new Lupin series is also spot on for it because it’s dealing with adults and applying it to the story itself, which is where a lot of the “early” sexuality in anime for fans started when you look at some of the 80’s movies. An OVA series like Rin certainly warrants it as well with what it does.

But we’re also seeing more shows like Highschool DxD, which I enjoyed, that used its sexuality well. But look at the end sequence. And as much as I may laugh and enjoy it on some levels, you have to ask, is it going too far? Is anime getting too sexy? And is story suffering because of it?

  1. It’s a cliche thing to say, but sex sells. I think depending on the story that it can hurt a story. For instance I saw this one anime that literally halted the story to get a panty shot out of the way before it continued. It made me wonder why they would break the flow of the story just for that, but they still did it.

Sex sells I’m afraid, but thankfully there are a lot of shows out there that are story focused. They aren’t really hard to find either once you know what you’re looking for.

  2. well the ecchi factor is just a must for school life stories, not anyone can get a great school life story that sells good. thats why they use sex to increase their odds, its just like you need blood in a fighting anime or it doesnt sell that well. but also too much blood can become stupid like to much sex can actually ruin the story. so it depends more on your limits for it, as highschool dxd had story and sex but other animes only have sex as thats just a bad use of it
