Star Wars: Dawn Of The Jedi #2 Review

2 min read

A mysterious stranger draws them in.

Creative Staff:
Writer: John Ostrander
Artist: Dan Parsons

What They Say:
The balance of the Force on Tython has been thrown into turmoil. A ship has fallen from the sky, bringing with it a strange, dark, and hostile individual. Three young Jédaii who felt “called” to the site of the crash now fight for their lives with their swords and the Force. But live or die, the storm that will engulf the homeworld of the Je’daii has already begun!

The Review:
The first issue set the stage, telling the background of Tython and explaining key components about Je’daii, the Force, and the Force Hounds that are tasked with finding and culling the Force sensitives in their world. This issue jumps into action, while also effectively introducing the main young Je’daii characters. Each of them is introduced in a way that sets up their personalities, strengths, and weaknesses. Each of them has a vision of a mysterious stranger that seems to call them to a location on Tython.

The three make an interesting set. Shae Koda is an impetuous scientist, working on creating genetically altered creatures when she has her vision. Tasha Ryo is a Twi’lek child of privilege; guilted by her Baron father to bring her Je’daii skills to the service of his clan. Sek’nos is a ladies’ man, a charmer, dabbling with the darker side of the Force to the exclusion of the light. As they come together you can sense there will be friction between them, and I’m looking forward to seeing where that will lead.

In Summary:
The second issue of the series maintains an amazingly high artistic quality. The vibrant colors and detailed scenes really captured my eye. Each segment that features one of the core three Je’daii was well structured and tightly paced. It gave enough information to help us get to know each of them, while still keeping the story moving. I’m fascinated by the concept of the balance of the Force, with a true Je’daii keeping both the light and the dark within. I’m curious to see how this will play out over the course of the series, and intrigued by the contrast with the Jedi and the Sith.

The writing isn’t as lyrical as in the first issue, but it works well for the pacing and action level of the story being told here. The setup for the main body of the story is solid, and the characters make me want to learn more. There is enough mystery in the helmeted stranger, and in the brief appearance of another mysterious, lonely figure on one of the moons of Tython, to make me eager for the next installment.

Grade: A
