Why The Death Of Joss Whedon’s ‘Wonder Woman’ Movie Is A Good Thing

2 min read

While fans look to be rightly enthused so far when it comes to what Joss Whedon is doing for Marvel Studios when it comes to The Avengers, fans of Wonder Woman should be equally glad that things fell through back in 2007 when he was set to tackle that feature film. Whedon is the type of man of his fans who can do no wrong, but everyone has their wrong approaches and his discussion about what he wanted to do with it certainly paints it as the wrong way to go. The central idea of how she would be able to understand humanity can be seen in two ways, one with her just dealing with knowing someone mortal and flawed like Steve Rogers, but the flip side is that you can also see it as “a man has to explain it to the woman” angle as well. Which simply is not the way to deal with the character either. With the thankfully aborted TV series and now a better idea as to what the movie was going to be about, it’s definitely been rough for the Amazon princess in the last few years, but it may have been for the best.

She was a little bit like Angelina Jolie [laughs]. She sort of traveled the world. She was very powerful and very naïve about people, and the fact that she was a goddess was how I eventually found my in to her humanity and vulnerability, because she would look at us and the way we kill each other and the way we let people starve and the way the world is run and she’d just be like, None of this makes sense to me. I can’t cope with it, I can’t understand, people are insane. And ultimately her romance with Steve was about him getting her to see what it’s like not to be a goddess, what it’s like when you are weak, when you do have all these forces controlling you and there’s nothing you can do about it. That was the sort of central concept of the thing. Him teaching her humanity and her saying, OK, great, but we can still do better.
