‘Transformers 3’ Sails Past ‘Lord Of The Rings: ROTK’ At Box Office

1 min read

It’s not too often that we really see the top of the box office earners change but it’s happened a few times in the last couple of years and twice this year as well. The latest change comes as Transformers: Dark of the Moon has sailed into the #4 spot on the list by bringing in enough to gain over Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. Which is certainly going to cause some angst among the fans, though if they’re lucky we’ll see another theatrical release next year before The Hobbit comes out and it can try and gain some of that back. Both movies have a way to go to catch up to the first through third slots though, and it’s hard to imagine what will be the one that will pushed Avatar off of its perch.

  1. Avatar 2D (Fox – 2009) $2.7B
  2. Titanic 2D (Fox/Paramount – 1997) $1.8B
  3. Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2 3D (Warner Bros – 2011) $1.3B
  4. Transformers: Dark Of The Moon 3D (Paramount – 2011) $1,119.1
  5. The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King (New Line/Warner Bros – 2003) $1.1B
