‘Black Panther II’ Theatrical Release Scheduled

2 min read

With the Black Panther film making a whopping $1.35 billion worldwide just on theatrical box office receipts, a sequel was a given. When Marvel Studios revealed their Phase 4 plans there was a decent bit of surprise that the sequel didn’t land in there. That was changed this weekend – a bit – in that Black Panther 2 is set for a May 6th, 2022 release. It wasn’t listed explicitly as part of Phase 4, however, so it’s unclear if this is the start of Phase 5 or just building on a bit more to Phase 4 – which wouldn’t be a surprise. Everything listed for Phase 4 so far has been through 2021 with this being the first 2022 date.

As previously reported, Ryan Coogler will be back to direct the film.

Check out our ranking of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and our review of Black Panther.

The first film was written by Joe Robert Cole and Ryan Coogler with Coogler directing and arrived on February 16th, 2018. The cast included Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa/Black Panther, Michael B. Jordan as Erik Killmonger, Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Andy Serkis as Ulysses Klaw, Winston Duke as M’Baku, Forest Whitaker as Zuri, Angela Bassett, Martin Freeman, Latitia Wright, Florence Kasumba, Sterling K. Born, and John Kani.

Plot concept: Black Panther follows T’Challa who, after the events of “Captain America: Civil War,” returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to take his place as King. However, when an old enemy reappears on the radar, T’Challa’s mettle as King and Black Panther is tested when he is drawn into a conflict that puts the entire fate of Wakanda and the world at risk.
