Missing in Action: Aniplex USA Titles Without A Physical Media Release

3 min read

Aniplex USAForum regular Buckeye has been keeping an interesting list since last summer in the forums that look at the various shows that Aniplex USA and which ones have gotten dubs and which ones haven’t as well as the recently picked up shows where it’s not known yet. Since the days of everything being dubbed are long gone, it can certainly be useful. But what we’re also starting to see now are series that are picked up for streaming and home video rights that aren’t exercising their home video rights. It’s problematic enough for fans when we get just DVD releases (oh, Silver Spoon…. where’s my high def porkchop!) but when shows aren’t even released and all we get is streaming – which may not even last?

So we wanted to take a moment to highlight these missing in action titles and then take a look at the shows that haven’t been decided yet. Those that are missing in action are certainly an interesting group of titles.

  1. Day Break Illusion
  2. Mekaku City Actors
  3. Mushishi: Next Passage
  4. Nanana’s Buried Treasure
  5. Samurai Flamenco

We know that Samurai Flamenco has gotten a release in the UK and in Australia, making those titles of interests for fans since there’s at least some release out there. But the rest, at least in English-speaking territories, are still MIA. Madman picked up Mushishi but that series finished its broadcast in December 2014. Day Break Illusion finished in September 2013 and never got any overseas pickups. Mekaku City Actors landed in the spring of 2014 and has suffered similarly with no international pickups. Nanana’s Buried Treasure fares a bit better as that spring 2014 series at least got a Madman pickup for Australia and that’s only this coming summer finally getting a DVD-only release in that region.

With what’s to come, there’s also that kind of uncertainty as to which shows may not make the cut. A dub is hard enough, but no home video release at all?

  1. Anthem of the Heart (previously released as an imported version)
  2. Asterisk War
  3. Charlotte
  4. Classmates
  5. Classroom Crisis
  6. Erased
  7. God Eater
  8. Gunslinger Stratos
  9. High School Fleet
  10. Persona 3 (previously released as an imported version)

Within this list I’d expect at least the two movies, Anthem of the Heart and Classmates to get home video releases and likely a non-import version of the Persona 3 movie. Charlotte and Asterisk War are likely to get home video releases as well and I’d include Erased on that list as well. But with some of the other titles I can see them hedging and not releasing a home video for Gunslinger Stratos and God Eater and possibly Classroom Crisis.

Which ones do you think will make the cut? And what do you think will get a dub?
